Door County Maritime Museum Hosts Winter Speakers Series

The Door County Maritime Museum located in Sturgeon Bay will launch its popular Winter Speakers Series on Monday, November 17 at 7 pm.

The presentation focuses on the Museum’s “Freshwater Fury” exhibit and features Roy Eckberg, meteorologist with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association’s (NOAA) National Weather Service Office in Green Bay. Eckberg will discuss the Weather Service in 1913, the year that the Great Lakes were hit with possibly their worst storm on record – the storm upon which the museum’s “Fury” exhibit is based. Eckberg will also review the climatology surrounding November’s notorious storms.

A second program in the series will take place on Tuesday, December 9, when photojournalist Christopher Winters will come to the museum to discuss his newest book Centennial, a stunning piece of work commemorating the 100th anniversary of the carrier St. Mary’s Challenger and featuring Winters’ photography.

The series will continue after the holidays with at least three more programs, one by the museum’s new executive director Bob Desh as he recounts highlights from his 36 years of service in the United States Coast Guard.

The Speakers Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Door County Maritime Museum, an organization dedicated to assisting the museum both through fundraising projects and volunteer service. Admission to the program is free; however, “the hat will be passed” to help defray costs. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends groups.
