Door County Memorial Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Events, Donation

During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Door County Memorial Hospital is hosting a number of events to celebrate, educate and give to others in need.

Planned as part of the activities is a visit by Marti Spittell Ziegelbauer, a former local television journalist/radio personality and a cervical cancer survivor, on Oct. 28. The Marti Spittell Ziegelbauer (MSZ) Foundation recently donated $10,000 to the hospital’s foundation. The money is aimed at helping area low income or underinsured women access free reproductive health cancer screenings.

Also, the hospital staff is inviting the public to join them as they raise money for a hospital employee who is fighting breast cancer and the family of former hospital financial analyst Marisse Miller Krishka, who lost her battle to that disease Oct. 7.

Jennifer Fischer, the director of the Women’s and Children’s Health Center, said the time is right for people to give to others as well as themselves. “We are increasing awareness about doing these preventive health screenings. We don’t want women to let finances make decisions for them,” she said.

Artfully painted and sculpted pumpkins go on sale the week of Oct. 20 in the Women’s Health Center. They are being created by hospital staffers and will range in price.

Next, silent auction items will be displayed in the Women’s Health Center beginning Oct. 27 with winners announced Oct. 30. Included are handcrafted pieces as well as new items.

Call the hospital’s Women’s Health Center or Patient Financial Services Department at 920.743.5566 to learn more about accessing the services.
