Door County Poets Featured in WFOP Calendar

The 2009 Wisconsin Poets’ Calendar is popping up in stores throughout the state. This week-at-a-glance spiral-bound engagement calendar features the poems of 174 Wisconsin and state connected writers. Nancy F. Rafal of Baileys Harbor co-edited the work along with Kathy Dodd Miner of Madison. The women selected oil paintings of Ellison Bay artist, Rob Williams, to highlight the cover, title page, and season pages.
Fifteen Door County poets have works in the volume. The Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets (WFOP) has been publishing a calendar in this format for 23 years. Prior to that the calendar was begun and issued for three years by Tom and Mary Montag.
“The calendar makes a practical, colorful, and inspirational gift,” stated Rafal. Moon phases and a variety of holidays are included. NASA moon images were used according to layout artist, F. J. Bergmann of Madison. And according to Miner, “Selecting works from the nearly 900 poems submitted was a challenge but a delightful one.”
Another feature of the calendar is the winning entries in the 2008 WFOP Student Poetry Contest. This contest is open to all students of middle and high school age, including home schooled children. Cash prizes were awarded three winners at each level in addition to having the poems included in the calendar. Honorable mention poems were also published in the calendar.
