Door County police target internet crimes against children

The Door County Sheriff’s department was part of Operation Black Veil, an effort by police departments in Northeast Wisconsin and the Department of Criminal Investigations to crack down on internet crimes against children.

Police posted on sites, pretending to be children as young as 10. Door County Sheriff Terry Vogel said officers had over 500 contacts from people who wanted to share child pornography, meet with the children or look for others.

Only 17 people followed through with those posts and have been arrested so far, Vogel said. None of the arrests were Door County residents.

To protect against predators like those arrested in Operation Black Veil, Vogel said parents should keep computers in open areas of the house, and not allow them to be used unsupervised or in children’s rooms. Parents should also check the internet history of their children’s computer use to make sure they visit appropriate sites.

The Sturgeon Bay Common Council approved the creation of a new Tax Incremental District, TID No. 4, on the city’s west waterfront. Six parcels will be taken out of TID No. 2, adjacent to the new TID, and added to TID No. 4. Creating a TID will allow the city to use additional tax revenue from future West Waterfront Redevelopment projects to fund infrastructure improvements in the district. The TID No. 4 plan now heads to the city’s Joint Review Board for final approval.
