Door County Potters’ Guild Gallery Tours

The Door County Potters’ Guild will host their annual self-guided tour Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 from 10 am to 5 pm. Seven of the eight potters of the guild will open their studios and galleries for demonstrations, refreshments, and a sneak peak at the newest pieces of pottery for 2011. Each potter will have brochures available with a detailed map of the tour.

Chad Luberger’s Plum Bottom Pottery, located south of Egg Harbor, will feature functional and decorative pottery created primarily in porcelain clay fired in a gas kiln.

Renee’ Schwaller’s Off the Wheel Pottery, located in Egg Harbor, will feature thrown and hand-built white stoneware fired in an electric kiln. Schwaller uses a technique known as sgraffito, Italian for ‘scratching through slip.’ She will feature new carved jewelry, demonstrate sgraffito carving, and serve chocolate chip cookies and Door County apple cider.

Tony and Renee Gebauer’s TR Pottery, located in Fish Creek, will not only showcase Tony’s functional and decorative wares fired in electric and wood kilns but the work of many fine artists.

Brian and Tracey Fitzgerald of Ephraim Clayworks practice the fine art of Raku firing in addition to creating a line of functional stoneware fired in a gas kiln. His work and the work of other artists are housed in a historic cabin in Ephraim.

David and Jeanne Aurelius’ Clay Bay Pottery is located south of Ellison Bay. The couple both throw and hand-build pottery, specializing in Door County scenes, floral designs, tiles, and lady vases. They will demonstrate how to make teapots and serve David’s famous cookies and punch.

Thor and Judy Thoreson’s Gills Rock Stoneware is located in the heart of Ellison Bay. Their decorative and functional pottery, both wheel thrown and hand-built, is known for its unique color palette and distinctive glazing. Thor is well known for his large urns decorated in floral motifs and Door County scenes.

Finally, at Ellison Bay Pottery Studio, located on Garrett Bay Road, John Dietrich and Diane McNeil both throw and hand build functional pottery with gem-like glazes fired in a gas kiln. The duo will demonstrate collaborative sculpture.
