Door County Reads Comes to the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library

Gary Jones will lead a discussion at the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library on Jan. 11 at 6:30 pm. A part of Door County Reads, the discussion will focus on Ray Bradbury’s novels Fahrenheit 451 and Martian Chronicles. Jones and participants will identify and evaluate Bradbury’s criticism of his own society, and determine the validity of his predictions for current society.

Many serious readers may dismiss science fiction as fantasy adventures characterized by Star Trek. But others prefer the term speculative fiction to characterize the genre, as not every sci-fi story has a rocket ship careening through space. Some, like the Star Wars series do have spacecraft, but they also have mythic overtones, echoing themes found in Homer’s Odyssey. And most classic speculative fiction provides social criticism along with a narrative.

Science fiction can often provide the distance through time, space, technology, and imagination that allows reader to view clearly their own society.
