Door County Reads Event Schedule

Residents and visitors are invited to participate in this year’s Door County Reads by reading The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers and participating in scheduled activities throughout January and February. Special presentations, book discussions, film showings, a unique art exhibit, and more will take place throughout the county.

Door County Libraries are offering free copies of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter while supplies last. Take a look at the listings below for a sample of activities related to the book. For more information visit http://www.doorcountyreads.org.

Highlights:

Feb. 3, 1 – 2 pm: Untitled Used and Rare Books will host a book discussion of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. 20 N Third Ave, Sturgeon Bay.

Feb. 4, 2 pm: Parents and teachers are invited to join us for a session on “Baby Sign Language” at the Sturgeon Bay Library. 107 S 4th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay.

Feb. 6, 2 pm: Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library will screen free showing of 1968 film version of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Optional discussion will follow. 2323 Mill Road, Sister Bay.

Feb. 6, 7 pm: Forestville Town Hall will host a book discussion of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. County H, Maplewood.

Feb. 7, 2 – 4:40 pm: Register in advance for the Southern Cooking Class at NWTC. Learn to prepare and serve traditional southern cuisine. NWTC, 229 N 14th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay.

Feb. 8, 7 pm: Frederick “Doc” Heide of American Folklore Theatre will present “What the Heart is Hunting For: A Psychological Perspective.” Susan Guthrie of Bluefront CafО will provide treats, “Tutti Strings” Classical Trio will provide music, and Nanette Anschutz will be available for sign language interpretation. Feb. 9, 10:30 am: Jon Wos, Wisconsin VSA artist and board member, will present an overview of the current “Creative Power” exhibit at the Miller Art Museum. He will also discuss how his disability influenced his art and life. Sturgeon Bay Library, 107 S 4th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay.

Feb. 10, 1 – 2 pm: Novel Bookstore will host a book discussion of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. 8085 Highway 57, Baileys Harbor.

Feb. 14, 10 am: Learning in Retirement participants may sign up for a single-session class focusing on The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Pre-registration is required. NWTC, 229 N 14th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay.

Feb. 14, 2:30 pm: Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library will host a book discussion of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. 2323 Mill Road, Sister Bay.

Feb. 15, 6:30 pm: Sturgeon Bay Library will screen a free showing of the 1952 film version of The Members of the Wedding, a Carson McCullers’ book and stage play. 107 S 4th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay.

Feb. 16, 4 pm: Scandia Village will host a book discussion of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. 290 Smith Drive, Sister Bay.

Feb. 16, 4 – 4:30 pm: 2012 Door County Reads will conclude with music provided by some of the community’s youngest musicians. Just as music by Mozart was appreciated in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, young Door County String Academy musicians will briefly share some of the music important to their learning process.
