Door County Sail and Power Squadron Announce First Seminar

The Door County Sail and Power Squadron invites the community to the first of six summer seminars – Marine Radio on June 15. The VHF radio is the mainstay of coastal communication and is essential for marine emergency communications. US Coast Guard Rescue 21 is complete on the Great Lakes. Digital Selective Service (DSC) is a pivotal component of Rescue 21. DSC simplifies and improves rescue and routine call signaling, however, you need to know how to use it.

This seminar answers these needs as well as how VHF’s work and their controls; using the correct channels, procedures and technology; advanced methods of communication; programming your Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI); interfacing GPS, and how to select a Marine VHF radio.

All seminars are held on Saturday, 9 – 11 am, at Skipper Bud’s Quarterdeck Marina in Sturgeon Bay. This year’s series will include student materials and Captain’s Quick Guides. Fees for all seminars (except Anchoring) are $25 for USPS members and $35 for non-members. For more information or to register call Squadron Educational Officer, Steve Rank at 920.743.5469 or call Eve Gains at Quarterdeck, 920.746.8200.
