Door County Sail & Power Squadron Presents Advanced Courses

For the first time in its 56 year history, the Door County Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS), District 10, is offering advanced boating classes to the public. The Squadron, one of the first in the country to provide the new service, will begin the new program by presenting two in-depth courses, “Seamanship” and “Piloting.” As an extra incentive, a “Sail-Away” membership package may be purchased, which includes a special rate for a year’s membership in addition to the two classes.

Students of “Seamanship” will learn navigation rules, hull design and performance, responsibilities of the skipper, boat care, nautical customs, common courtesy on the water, and more.

“Piloting” will focus on techniques for piloting a boat in coastal and inland conditions, emphasizing planning and checking along with the use of GPS and digital charting. Plotting, labeling, use of the compass, aids to navigation, and a host of related topics will be incorporated.

About 80 members strong, the Squadron is a civic service organization that, along with educational opportunities, provides free vessel safety checks to any recreational boaters in the area.
