Door County Schools Reworking Graduation Plans

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) provided new guidance May 7, recommending that all schools in the state cancel or postpone all in-person commencement ceremonies scheduled for the spring and summer.

Any public gatherings such as traditional graduation ceremonies that are normally held at this time should be virtual or noncontact, and they should not physically convene groups of people. The five Door County school districts are currently reworking their graduation plans to align with this new state guidance, their district liability insurance and consultation with their school attorneys.

The school districts have all agreed to honor the Class of 2020 with some type of virtual recognition and to consider using one of the recommended DHS models for individually presenting diplomas to students. Their plans will seek to recognize the graduates while minimizing the health and safety risks for students, families and the community at this time.
