Door County Tourism Zone Annual Meeting June 17

• The Door County Tourism Zone Commission will hold its annual meeting June 17. Chairman Bob Kufrin will review the commission’s 2009 annual report, audit, and accomplishments. The Tourism Zone Commission oversees the collection and disbursement of the 5.5 percent room tax collected throughout the county. Room tax collections bring in over $2.5 million annually, with 66 percent going to the Door County Visitor Bureau to promote overnight stays, and 30 percent kicked back to the municipalities in which it’s collected to be spent in any way the municipality chooses.

Door County Visitor Bureau President and CEO Jack Moneypenny will discuss 2009 marketing activities and updates on the 2010 season with time for questions.

The 2009 Annual Report and 2009 Audit/Management Letter are available at http://www.doorcountytourismzone.com, as is a PowerPoint presentation (available the week of June 14) that will be reviewed at the Annual Meeting with more pertinent information.

The annual meeting beings at 9 am at the Sister Bay Fire Station.

• The Town of Egg Harbor and Village of Egg Harbor will have a meeting June 23 to continue discussing the future of their joint fire department. The town is expected to submit a proposal to buy out the village’s interest in the fire department, then supply fire protection services back to the village. Town residents approved the idea at their annual meeting April 13. The meeting is at the Paul J. Bertschinger Center at 6 pm.

Baileys Harbor will host a Cognitive Mapping Forum June 15 at the town hall at 7 pm. Cognitive mapping is the mental mapping of a space or area. The forum is part of the town’s review of its 2005 Comprehensive Plan. Snacks and refreshments will be provided as the town discusses future planning and land use goals.

• The City of Sturgeon Bay gave preliminary approval to regulations limiting the number of dogs and cats per home or apartment in the city. The city may consider the ordinance again at its June 15 common council meeting.

The city is also considering reducing the number of streetlights it operates. A list of lights suggested for possible removal is available at http://www.sturgeonbaywi.org, and feedback on the suggestions can be sent to [email protected] or made by phone by calling 920.746.2820. The city operates almost 1,200 streetlights, costing over $165,000 each year.
