Door County Triathlon – Sprint Results

The sprint portion of the Door County Triathlon came to a close today with participants from Milwaukee and Madison finishing first in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

Matt Behnke of Milwaukee crossed the finish line first among the men, with a time of 1 hour, 8 minutes and 38 seconds. Finishing a minute and 42 seconds later was Cedar Rapids’ Ron Gierut, who beat Behnke in the bike by over a minute but fell behind in the run. Danny Voelker of Peoria, IL finished third among the men, with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes and 8 seconds.

For the women, Lauren Bierkel of Madison led in each category, finishing with a time of 1 hour, 14 minutes and 8 seconds. Kewaunee resident Tracy Valenta finished second with a time of 1 hour, 18 minutes and 39 seconds, followed by third-place finisher and Green Bay resident Robyn Lauritsen (1 hour, 21 minutes and 58 seconds).

In the men’s relay, the St. Louis team of Chris Gorman, Phillip Hoehn and Tim Hoehn came out on top with a time of 1 hour, 22 minutes and 8 seconds. Coming in a distant second was the Sturgeon Bay team of Mark Caballero, Palmer Kelsey and Liam Hogan. The margin between second and third was slim, however, as Villa Park, IL residents John, Billy and Ryan Murray finished just 10.1 seconds later.

The women’s relay was headed by the Baraboo, WI team of Angie Mielke, Becky Struck and Kayla Bower, who finished in 1 hour, 23 minutes and 7 seconds. They were followed four minutes later by the Milwaukee team of Kristen and Alison Maling and (first name not listed) Cunningham, and one minute after that by Teresa Prichard of Schofield, WI, Ashley Prichard of Minneapolis, and Kimberly Hazen of Madison.

Finally, in the mixed relay, a team led by Sturgeon Bay residents Mary Cram and Kenneth Wright III, along with Waupaca resident Dominic Frandrup, took first with a time of 1 hour, 24 minutes and 3 seconds. Finishing second was the Sussex, WI team of Andy and Barb Lemke and JT Thurler, with a time of 1 hour, 28 minutes and 5 seconds. The third-place finishers were Belleville, WI residents Judy and Nick Brashi and Raisa Ellington of Astoria, NY, with a time of 1 hour, 34 minutes and 59 seconds.

Overall, there were 1,091 participants in today’s sprint events.
