The Vagina Monologues is an award-winning play by Eve Ensler based on interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. A performance of the play will take place at The Landmark Resort in Egg Harbor on April 14 at 5:30 pm. Tickets cost $30, and will include the performance and dinner. Proceeds will benefit HELP of Door County, Inc.

Directed by Jessica Adams, HELP of Door County, Inc. Adult Services advocate, The Vagina Monologues will be performed by 12 women with differing backgrounds from all over the Door Peninsula: Jessica Adams, Carrie Counihan, Madelyn DePrey, Claudia Dubuque, Milly Gonzales, Nikki Hedeen, Jess Holland, Pamela Johnson, Chris Milton, Jenny Spude, Anne St. Henry, and Maggie Ter Horst.

The production is to be performed for the V-Day celebration. “This is a global movement that has been happening around the world for 15 years,” explains Adams. “The goal of the V-Day movement is to act as a ‘catalyst to promote creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence campaigns.’”

The Vagina Monologues is made up of a varying number of monologues read by a varying number of women. Every monologue somehow relates to the vagina, be it through sex, love, rape, menstruation, female genital mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the variety of names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.

“Mainly, the goal is to increase awareness about violence toward women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation, and sex slavery,” says Adams.

Adams, having done this show twice previously, knew it was a great fit for HELP of Door County, whose mission is to eliminate domestic abuse through prevention and intervention services and to advocate for social change.
