Door County YMCA and The Ridges Sanctuary Announce “No Family Left Inside”

The Door County YMCA and The Ridges Sanctuary will be offering “No Family Left Inside” for families in Door County for the first time this winter. This series of programs is designed to provide outdoor experiences for parents and children who want to explore Door County. Each month, the two organizations will team up to offer fun activities to give families more “outdoor time” and to learn something about nature.

The following programs have been scheduled:

• Snowshoe Hike on Saturday, January 9 from 10 am – noon; $10 per family

Strap on a pair of snowshoes and take to the trails at The Ridges! Snowshoeing is easy and fun for all ages, and a great way to explore the winter woods. Along the way, participants might identify animal tracks, learn how snow can actually keep wildlife warm, and study the science of snowflakes. Hot chocolate to warm up after the hike!

• Geocaching on Saturday, February 13 from 10 am – noon; $10 per family

Geocaching has been described as a “high-tech treasure hunt.” After discussing what geocaching is, how it got started, and some of the tips and tricks, you’ll head into the woods to seek out a cache hidden within The Ridges Sanctuary. A few GPS units will be available for use during the session, or participants can bring their own.

• Wander the Woods After Dark on Friday, March 12 from 7 – 8:30 pm; $10 per family

Have you ever explored the outdoors at night? Too scary? On this hike, participants will discover that night explorations can be great fun, and not at all frightening. Along the hike people can learn about nighttime animals and their adaptations, call owls, and finish with a bonfire and s’mores. Bring a small flashlight if you’d like.
