Door County YMCA Receives Childcare Facility

Bob Papke

The Door County YMCA recently obtained the child care facility, formerly known as Sneakers & Boots, in the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park from Bob Papke. He was a partner in the construction of the facility but sold his controlling interest in 2005. Following the closure of Sneakers & Boots in August 2013, he purchased the building and sold it to the YMCA. The transactions included a personal donation to further support the YMCA and assist it in completing the purchase.

The idea for childcare in the Industrial Park began when Papke was on the Door County Economic Development Board, where he served as both a board member and chairman. “It is important to continue that presence and support for working families and small businesses in our community. Working with the YMCA on this project and their strong commitment to Door County is a win-win,” Papke said. “I was born and raised in Door County and I think we owe something back to our community.”

Papke’s donation amounted to $100,000. He is the owner of Pine Crest Village in Sturgeon Bay.

The Door County YMCA will hold an open house to the public later this spring. For more information, contact Tom Beerntsen, CEO of the Door County YMCA, at 920.743.4949.
