Door County’s Local Librarian

There is no better place to find literature of all kind than your local library, and no one better to help you find what you’re looking for than the librarians. Meet your local librarian, Kathy White Graf of the Sturgeon Bay Branch Library.

Favorite Section of the library: Crafts and cookbooks are perennial favorites. I also love to read children’s books, and always have one or two non-fiction books in progress that I am learning from!

Favorite author: Nora Roberts is my go-to author for fun reading. Gooseberry Patch and Taste of Home cookbooks are always great to browse. And books by Eckhart Tolle are a necessity for a sense of peace and growth.

What book should every patron read: Ish by Peter Reynolds – this is a book for children and adults. It takes just a moment to read, and the wonderful message can last a lifetime. I find that Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff by Richard Carlson is full of reminders of what’s important. I like books that make me think!

Favorite customer question: I love the questions I can answer immediately or that we can research successfully in a short period of time!

Favorite part of working in the library: I love the chance to be creative, to write, and to happily interact with customers and other staff members.

What is a library service that many people are unaware of? Walking Books is a local service, provided by members of the Friends of Door County Libraries. Books are delivered to and from individuals at their home or place of residence.

Similar, but on a much broader scale, the Wisconsin Talking Book and Braille Library service provides free talking books and listening equipment via mail to qualified individuals. Our regional library is in Milwaukee and is part of the Talking Book Program of the Library of Congress. A toll free (in Wisconsin) number (1.800.242.8822) or website (http://dpi.wi.gov/rll/wrlbph/) can answer questions that a physician or family member may have. Our library in Sturgeon Bay has application forms and information sheets as well.

Interests outside the library: My family and grandchildren are a major focus of my life. I also enjoy reading, gardening, photography and writing.

The library is an incredible resource, chock full of not only the literature that rounds out academic reading lists, but novels, memoirs, mysteries, and non-fiction books touching on a variety of subjects, from writers all over the world. The Door County Libraries serve local residents and visitors, offer DVDs, CDs, and magazines, an extensive interlibrary loan and free Internet.
