Door County’s Newport State Park Host Earth Science Activities

Newport Wilderness Society (NWS), the official Friends Group of Newport State Park, have scheduled the following events to celebrate Earth Science Week, October 12 – 18. The events will be held in the Hotz Wilderness Room located in the Visitor Center at Lot 1 in Newport State Park.

• 2 – 3:30 pm, Thursday, October 16: Energy Status of the United States

Dr. Jack W. Travis, a retired geology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, will present.

• 2 – 3:30 pm, Friday, October 17: Contaminated Soil and Ground Water

Dr. Jack W. Travis will present.

• 10 – 11:30 am, Saturday, October 18: Identifying Rocks and Fossils

Dr. Jack W. Travis will teach children and adults how to identify rocks and fossils, first at the Hotz Wilderness Room and then along the rocky shoreline of the park.

• 2 pm, Saturday, October 18: Parkland Rocks and Landforms

Dr. Allan Schneider, a retired geology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, will give a slide presentation, a largely non-technical geologic tour of about 60 city, county, state, and national parks and monuments.
