Newport State Park features the county’s most solitary camping and one of its great beaches.

A popular picnic spot, Newport is also home to 38 miles of unspoiled hiking trails and 17 miles of biking trails weaving through hardwood and evergreen forests. Bike-happy kids will love the ride.

Naturalist programs take children deeper into the stories behind the plants, animals, and geology of the states’ only formally designated Wilderness Park.

Rock Island State Park takes some work to get to, but once there visitors find it an unrivaled Door County paradise. Reachable only by ferry, the island features the Thordarson Estate, Rock Island Lighthouse, and great hiking.

Rock Island doesn’t offer any programming or rentals, but for an escape to a nearly untouched vision of the peninsula’s natural state, you can do no better.

• If Whitefish Dunes State Park were nothing more than a beach, it would be one of Door County’s greatest attractions. Fortunately for visitors, park naturalist Carolyn Rock offers so much more for the kids.

The sprawling sand beach is hailed as one of the best in the Midwest, and the dunes that give the park its name are ecological wonders. Climb to the top of Old Baldy, a 93-foot tall sand dune, or stay on the beach and check out activities at the Big Red Tent.
