Door County’s TAP Gives Voice to Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol”

Welcome back to old time radio-theater, where the actors often play multiple roles and the best view is with your eyes closed. The Third Avenue Playhouse returns to the airwaves with vintage radio advertisements, live sound effects and a classic radio drama – straight from the pages of Charles Dickens. A Christmas Carol: The Radio Show is a unique retelling of a Christmas classic.

Ebenezer Scrooge, an old Victorian-era miser, must face three mysterious apparitions who work to bring kindness to his cold heart.

“Scrooge was not written as a caricature,” says director Henry Timm. “Rather he was a look into the mindset of early Victorian England. Dickens meant this piece as a call to once again embrace the spirit of Christmas and goodwill. What makes it a classic is that we can look at it through the eyes of our current society.”

In addition to directing, Timm wrote the adaptation for the stage and plays Ebenezer Scrooge.

“Last year, we used the radio show format to present It’s a Wonderful Life,” notes Judy Drew, TAP’s Executive Director. “Our audiences just loved it. Some people came to the theater not quite knowing what to expect, but they left asking when we would do a radio show again.”
