Door County’s Wintertime State Park Activities

Peninsula State Park:

Volunteers and Peninsula State Park staff have been busy in mid-December rolling and grooming cross-country ski trails. Peninsula offers terrific trails for beginners and those more experienced. Conditions change with the weather, so if conditions deteriorate call Park Headquarters at 920.868.3258 to check if trails are open. A trail pass is required when trails are open.

Also, be sure to check out centennial merchandise, with proceeds funding special activities this year in celebration of Peninsula’s 100th year. For example, American Folklore Theatre will be perform a new show, Sunsets and S’Mores, which highlights park history via a musical revue. Peninsula will also offer a multiple-stage centennial geocache for outdoor enthusiasts. Visit http://www.peninsulafriends.org and navigate to the centennial page to see a growing list of activities.

A number of programs are offered throughout the winter at the park. Call 920.854.5976 for more information.

Whitefish Dunes State Park:

As the snow continues to fall, winter enthusiasts are welcome at Whitefish Dunes State Park. Ski trails are for stride skiing only and the Black Trail and beach are open to hikers and snowshoers. Guests should be aware that there is no hiking or snowshoeing allowed on or alongside any ski trail (Red, Yellow or Green), and the Brachiopod trail does not make a continuous loop during the ski season; so, those wishing to see the wetland are asked to return on the Black trail.

Responsible pet owners and their pets are also welcome at Whitefish Dunes. During the winter dogs are allowed on the Black trail and beach; however, pets must be on a leash no longer than 8 feet at all times.

The shelter building is open to all. Enjoy a warm fire with wood provided by the Friends of Whitefish Dunes, a group that provides a variety of assistance to the park by helping provide school programming, specials events and improvements to the park. The Friends bookstore is a great way to support this wonderful organization while doing your Holiday shopping.
