Door Shakespeare: Classic Theater in a Garden

Audiences in the Globe Theater experienced Shakespeare’s plays under the open sky. Patrons of Door Shakespeare continue in that tradition, enjoying two comedies in rotation this season.

Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing (popularized in the film by Kenneth Branagh) tells the stories of Beatrice and Benedick, both who have vowed never to marry, and Hero and Claudio, whose path to true love does not run smoothly, both tales with happily predictable resolutions.

Sheridan’s 1775 comedy of manners The Rivals presents the romance of Lydia Languish and Jack Absolute (their names suggest the inherent satire in the silliness of the complications that ensue) and introduces the comedic Mrs. Malaprop who has given her name to the act of ridiculously misusing words.

Because of Björklunden’s nearness to Lake Michigan evenings can be cool; dress appropriately. And keep a warm spot in your heart for this small but classy theater company.

Much Ado (Mon., Thurs., Fri.) and The Rivals (Sun., Tues., Fri.) run through August 22 with a 7:30 pm curtain.
