Door Shakespeare’s 2012 Season Features “As You Like It” and “Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged!)”

William Shakespeare will make a giant leap through time this year, as Door Shakespeare sets its 2012 season of As You Like It in the Roaring Twenties era.

As You Like It will debut at Björklunden on June 29, and performances are set for Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays through August 12.

On Thursdays and select Saturdays, Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged!) will be performed.

Norma Saldivar will direct As You Like It. She is a professor of theater and drama at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and head of the graduate directing program.

The themes and motifs of As You Like It are universal: familial loyalty and disloyalty, the complex nature of love, friendship, hopefulness versus cynicism, disguises and gender bending and the rights of inheritance. The play features one of Shakespeare’s most famous and oft-quoted speeches, “All the world’s a stage,” and is the origin of the phrase “too much of a good thing.”

The Complete Works, the rollicking, irreverent and fast-paced condensation of all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays, is being brought back because of last year’s popularity.

The Complete Works will be directed by Drew Brhel, who has been active as actor and director in many Milwaukee venues.

The 2012 Door Shakespeare summer season was created and coordinated by Interim Artistic Director Ross Dippel and will be overseen by the new Managing Director Amy J. Ludwigsen.
