Drawing Workshop with Emily Salm

Emily Salm helps a sophomore, Ben Anderson, with his drawing.

One of the more peaceful and calm workshops that appealed to students at Gibraltar High School was drawing. This was led by Emily Salm who was inspired to be an artist at a young age. Drawing has been one of her most favorite things to do since kindergarten. Her hopes are to spread the love she has for art and for the students to have fun with creating their own interpretations.

Salm says that inspiration for her work would be nature and her love for children’s artwork. She describes how children’s artwork is free and that they aren’t worried about how people perceive it. In the class the students rarely speak with more focus put into what they are drawing. Music softly plays in the background giving the room and the students a more calming effect.

When Ben Anderson was asked why he chose this class he replied, “I thought it would be fun.”

The students were intrigued with what they were to accomplish. They each chose a different image to draw. Most of the images that were chosen were because they liked the color or liked the image itself. All of the images varied from flowers to different types of animals. When they got stuck on how to procede, the teacher would come over and walk them through the steps. The students showed how devoted and committed they were.

When Paige Franke was asked how she liked the class she replied, “It’s interesting and peaceful.” Overall, the students enjoyed the experience they received and hopefully will continue on with what they have learned.
