Eagle Wrestlers Open Season With Home Quad

Southern Door’s wrestling team hosted a four-team meet Thursday to open the season.

The Eagles wrestled against two of the teams – Denmark and Two Rivers – while the other team on hand – Kewaunee – will face them later in the season for a Packerland Conference dual meet.

Though Southern Door dropped the team dual matchups against both Two Rivers, 49-30, and Denmark, 64-10, Eagles head coach Jerry Englebert noted the meet featured individual highlights for the team, such as Lance Veeser winning his first-ever varsity match over Derek Klinkner of Two Rivers at 150 pounds.

“After a few losses [over] the years, this was Lance’s first win, and to do it on the varsity stage in front of the home crowd was a nice bonus,” Englebert said.

Southern Door’s wrestlers who won contested matches against Two Rivers each recorded pins. In addition to Veeser, they included Hayden Jeanquart (175), Nora LeFevre (113), Spencer Slezewski (138) and Sydney Turner (126).

Against Denmark, The Eagles’ Trevin Veeser won on a major decision at 157 pounds, and Mason Motquin recorded a pin at 132.

Up next for Southern Door is a series of dual matches at a tournament Saturday at Stratford.

“Stratford, De Pere, Crandon, Wausau East and Wittenberg-Birnamwood all look like solid teams ,which should make for some great wrestling,” Englebeert said.
