Eagles Advance Four Wrestlers to Sectional

Following Saturday’s WIAA Division 2 super regional at Denmark, four wrestlers from Southern Door – Mason Motquin, Wyatt Wilke, Hayden Jeanquart and Cody Nellis – are advancing to next Saturday’s individual sectional tournament at Wrightstown.

With 13 teams competing in the super regional, the top-four places in each weight class qualified for the sectional, compared to previous years when a regional with about half as many teams had only the top-two wrestlers advance.

“In the past there have been many times where coaches felt the third- and even fourth-place wrestler in our regional was better than wrestlers advancing from other regions,” said Eagles head coach Jerry Englebert. “This has been especially true when several teams in our area were strong at the same time.”

Southern Door recorded third-place finishes from Motquin (wrestling at 120 pounds) and Wilke (132), while Jeanquart (160) and Nellis (182) finished fourth.

Two other Eagle wrestlers, Trevor Englebert (138) and Jonas Jandrin (170) finished fifth after losing their matches for fourth place and the opportunity to advance to the sectional.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol qualified two wrestlers for the sectional with Ben Roman (285) placing second and Zak Wrobel (170) coming in third.

SB/S’s Spencer Madsen (126) finished fifth.

The top-three wrestlers in each weight class at the sectional will advance to the state tournament Feb. 23-25 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
