Edgewood Reception Features Ekholm, Groenjes, Popelka
A sign of the season for the art scene will take place May 27 with the first reception of the year at Edgewood Orchard Galleries. The reception, 4-7 pm, will feature Judi Ekholm, David Groenjes and Jeremy Popelka, who will speak at 5 pm as guests enjoy refreshments, browse the galleries and walk the grounds.
The main floor of the Gallery Barn and the outdoor walls of the courtyard will feature the work of much-loved Door County painter Judi Ekhlom. In addition to colorful woodlands and landscapes, with this show, Ekholm has also pushed herself in a new direction with more abstract paintings.
“It has been a wonderful year to explore, create and experiment,” Ekholm said of her time preparing for the show.
Metal sculptor David Groenjes of De Pere has used a lifelong love of art and 15 years of working in the auto-parts and repair industry to develop an intricate knowledge of the components he welds together. Featured both inside the gallery and in the gardens surrounding it, his pieces – from life-sized birds and horses to an amazing saxophone – delight visitors who try to discern which pieces and parts he has used to make his remarkable sculptures.
A beautiful collection of new work from world-renowned Sturgeon Bay glass artist Jeremy Popelka fills the main floor of the Edgewood barn during this exhibit. He introduces vibrant color combinations in his blown-glass pieces using the Murrini process, which consists of making tri-colored glass canes and encasing them onto a bubble which is then blown out with stunning results.
In addition to the three featured artists, other Edgewood artists who have work exhibited in the galleries’ opening group show will attend the May 27 reception. That show, Welcome Spring, features the work of more than 150 artists, which will be up in all of the gallery buildings through June 3.
Edgewood Orchard Galleries, 4140 Peninsula Players Road in Fish Creek, is open daily, 10 am – 5 pm.
