Educational Caving Event Upcoming

The Wisconsin Speleological Society (WSS) invites Door County residents and visitors to a showing of the short film entitled “Living On Karst” by renowned cave videographer Benjamin von Cramon on Saturday, August 16. After the film is presented, opportunities to explore the caves and karst topography of Door County will abound.

“Living On Karst,” an 18-minute documentary film, explores the risks of groundwater contamination in fragile karst aquifers like that of the Door Peninsula. It also highlights the restoration of a polluted aquifer and cave system in Kentucky. Everyone is invited to come and learn about the groundwater, and then take a trip underground, as cave outings to Door County caves and karst features will follow.

The schedule throughout the day includes a WSS meeting and showing of the video, commencing at 11 am at the Sturgeon Bay Public Library, Jane Green Room, 107 S. 4th Avenue. Then, at 1 pm, cave outings will take place. People interested in participating should meet in the main parking lot at Murphy County Park in the Town of Egg Harbor.

Dress to get muddy and bring a change of clothes. A functioning personal light source with fresh batteries is required (a headlamp is the best choice for hands free exploring). Gloves, sturdy footwear and a helmet will make the experience safer and more comfortable.
