Egg Harbor Awards Breakwall Contract

Luhr Bros. of Columbia, Ill. was chosen for Phase I of construction on the new Egg Harbor marina Aug. 5. Luhr Bros. won with a bid of $4,572,068 for the stone work.

The village is aiming for a marina opening of Memorial Day 2010.

“With the passage of the marina referendum last week, we wanted to move quickly to salvage as much of the 2009 building season as possible,” said village president Nancy Fisher. “Luhr Bros. will begin mobilizing their equipment immediately.”

Luhr Bros. will transport the stone for the breakwall by barge and work will be done from the water so heavy trucks will not travel through the village. Limestone for the base of the breakwall will come from Missouri via the Mississippi River, through the Illinois and Chicago rivers and eventually through Lake Michigan.

Phase II bid requests for the floating docks went out this week. That contract will be awarded in September, with placement of the docks expected in the spring of 2010.

The village was awarded a $400,000 grant by the Wisconsin Waterways Commission at the end of July for the marina. The grant is in addition to the $1.185 million awarded to the village for the marina in 2008.
