Egg Harbor Fire Station bid awarded to Van’s

• Egg Harbor’s fire station is getting a facelift. Van’s will begin work on the 40 year-old station on Harbor School Road this month. The station is jointly owned by the Town and Village of Egg Harbor, which operate a joint fire department. The $265,788 bid from Van’s came in under the $300,000 limit set by the town and village, which will split the cost of the renovation evenly.

The renovation will include the addition of a meeting room for training and a redone exterior. The two communities agreed to renovate the station last spring after a year of tensions nearly led to a split of the department.

Where to Retire magazine named Door County a top retirement town and will feature it in the Sept./ Oct. 2011 issue. The issue will be on newsstands nationwide Aug. 23.

• The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recorded the fourth lowest number of traffic deaths for the month of July in 2011 since World War II. Fifty-five people died in 53 crashes this July. The safest July on record occurred in 2009, when 46 deaths were recorded. Both 1966 and 1971 recorded the record high of 140 fatalities.

This year to date 286 people have died in traffic crashes on Wisconsin roadways, including 44 motorcyclists, three motorcycle passengers, and 27 pedestrians. That’s 62 fewer deaths than the five-year average.
