Egg-stravaganza at Crossroads

Crossroads will host their “EGG-stravaganza,” and will get some help from the Door County Library and the Door County Historical Society.

Beginning at 1:30, families can take part in some “eggs-periments.” Learners will crack, break, and throw eggs, and even drop them out the window from the upper level of the Collins Learning Center. Families will also have the opportunity to dissect an unfertilized egg.

Many Door County pioneers kept backyard chickens for the eggs (and for Sunday dinners). The “heritage eggs” activity begins at 2:30 pm. Participants will step into the past by visiting the Warren House and the Schopf House in the Heritage Village at Big Creek, where eggs will be “hidden” in plain sight by members of the Door County Historical Society. Each young person who can locate the eggs among the antiques will receive a small prize.

The Door County Library will help conclude the activities by sponsoring a free screening of the feature-length documentary Mad City Chickens. The “mad” in the title refers to Madison, Wisconsin where a number of citizens are involved in sustainably raising chickens. The film is appropriate for children in grades 3 and up, though younger kids are welcome.

Master Gardener Tom Luebker will present a program on home landscape design on April 22 at 7 pm. This week, he will discuss Choosing Plants Wisely. His tips will help gardeners understand plant basics so they use plants that grow in Door County and the very local conditions of their yards. The program is free and open to the public.

Crossroads at Big Creek, located at 2041 Michigan Street, is open 2 to 4:30 pm daily, but will be closed on Easter Sunday.
