Emerson Cultural Series Wraps Up

The Emerson Cultural Series will present its last event of the current concert season on Tuesday, May 12, 7:30 pm, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County, Ephraim. A trio of talented musicians including Gerhard Bernhard, violinist Lynn Gudmundsen and pianist Don Vandenhouten will perform an eclectic program of Baroque and Irish music as well as a number of Broadway and popular tunes.

Multi-instrumentalist Gerhard Bernhard, Sister Bay, grew up in Germany and frequently performed with several early music ensembles after moving to Chicago. He founded the Door County Folk Festival in 1980, which annually attracts folk dance enthusiasts from around the world. He and his wife Grace ran Sunset Concert Cruises for 27 years from Gills Rock.

During her 35-year career, violinist/fiddler Lynn Gudmundsen, Baileys Harbor, has performed and recorded with many different bands and in a variety of styles including classical, folk, country, pop and bluegrass. Primavera Strings, a local string trio, has rekindled her delight for playing classical music. She is the founder of the Door County Bluegrass Camp http://www.doorcountybluegrasscamp.com 

Rounding out the trio is pianist Don Vandenhouten, Sheboygan, who has composed, arranged and produced original music for films, TV and commercials. Don also played piano, sang, joked, conducted, and recorded with many stars for 20 years in Chicago, New York, Nashville and Las Vegas. Highlights include playing for President Kennedy at the White House.

During the musicale, Bernhard will demonstrate and talk about a few rare folk instruments from his collection of more than 100 different musical instruments.

The concert will be held on Tuesday, May 12 at 7:30 pm, at UUFDC, 10341 Water Street (Hwy 42), Ephraim. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Introduced by the late Erik Eriksson, the purpose of the Emerson Cultural Series is to provide cultural opportunities for members of the Door Community.
