Retired surgeon John Herlache is gearing up to ‘Run for a Cause’ in this year’s Nicolet Bay 5K. The the Run For A Cause program offers runners a free entry into the race once $250 has been raised for their chosen local non-profit, Herlache was been motivated by a different reason – to help improve the community through transportation.

The Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K has partnered with Going Garbage & Recycling to collect old running shoes in the Go Run and Recycle program.

The Striver Gymnastics Team had an incredible showing at the State Tournament in Waukesha, Wis. The team came home with two individual State Champions and numerous individual top ten placements.

The Wisconsin Short Course State Championship Masters Swim Meet took place April 2 – 3 at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wisconsin. Participants from Door County YMCA Masters Team included Bela Sandor, Mary Cram, and Tara Warren.

The Door County Triathlon Half Iron filled to its capacity of 1,000 participants a full three and a half months before race day. Less than 300 openings remain in the sprint distance course, which is also capped at 1,000 participants.

These Door County YMCA Doorfins swimmers qualified for the Wisconsin YMCA State Swimming Championship in Brown Deer, Wisconsin held March 18 – 20. Swimmers are from Northern Door and Sturgeon Bay YMCA.

Chicago resident Emmy Stanley has braced for what she expects to be a bittersweet visit to Door County this summer. In May, she’ll run the Door County Half Marathon, returning to Door County for a summer visit, but for the first time, without her father Hartley Barker there to meet her.

The oldest team in the Northern Door Broomball League outlasted all the rest to take home the Hilander Cup Feb. 20 at the Teresa K. Hilander (TKH) Community Ice Rink.

After finishing the 50-mile route of the Door County Century Ride last year, I sat at a picnic table in the big barn at the Door County Fairgrounds and sipped slowly on a glass of Fat Tire.
