Door County is renowned nationwide for it’s array of local, independent theater in settings unlike any other. There’s the historic Peninsula Players on the water, Northern Sky Theatre in the woods of Peninsula State Park, and Door Shakespeare in the gardens of Bjorklunden.   • “Murder on the Nile” Opens at Pen Players

    Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Nile is set to sail at Peninsula Players Theatre for three weeks, Aug. 15 through Sept. 2. Cruising under the Egyptian sun, a river steamer makes its way up the Nile in 1947, carrying stylish honeymooners who find themselves immersed in blackmail, bullets and dead bodies.

  • “Side Effects May Include” Performed at Woodwalk Gallery

    At the Woodwalk Gallery on Aug. 12, 15 and 16 at 7:30 pm, Wendy Kaplan, president of MadKap Productions, will present Side Effects May Include written by former Seinfeld writer Marc Jaffe and playwright Eric Coble.

  • “Souvenir” Ends, and “Shirley Valentine” Begins

    Celebrate Stage Door Theatre Company’s production of Souvenir by attending a special cast party and performance on Aug. 10. The party begins at 7 pm with live music in the theater lobby by singer/songwriter Caleb Navarro.

  • “Chicago” Continues through August 12

    The Tony Award-winning, razzle-dazzle hit musical Chicago is currently on stage at Peninsula Players Theatre until Aug. 12. This electrifying musical with book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb is based on the play Chicago by Maurine Dallas Watkins, who based her play on actual events in 1920s Chicago.

  • Behind the of Scenes of “Chicago”

    Scott Boyle, the technical director, takes the drawings for the set from the set designer and uses a CAD (Computer-aided design) program on his computer to turn them into blueprints for the carpenters and interns.

    In just its first three plays, the Peninsula Players has moved from drama (Opus) to comedy (The Nerd) and on July 25, a musical (Chicago). “It’s a lot of fun,” says Sean Fortunato, who is transforming himself from a socially clueless nerd to a slick and manipulative lawyer in Chicago.

    Three scholarships and spaces are still available for Door Shakespeare’s educational children’s theatre program, Doorways. The workshop runs July 31 – Aug.

    Third Avenue Playhouse’s (TAP) series of theatre workshops for all ages continues July 21 with workshops led by Amy Ensign (currently appearing in Door Shakespeare’s As You Like It) and Heidi Swedberg (“Susan” from Seinfeld).

    Peninsula Players Theatre will present a free public seminar on physical comedy on July 14 from 2:30 – 4 pm. Players actors Lee E. Ernst and Erin Noel Grennan will discuss and demonstrate techniques of physical comedy.
