Environmental Council To Bring Top Water Experts to County

The Door County Environmental Council (DCEC) is bringing three top water experts to Door County for its 2008 Summer Seminar Series. The seminars will take place in July, August and September at varying locations.

Starting July 16, a program entitled “Can a Created Wetland Solve Your Septic Problem?” will take place at 7 pm at Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay. The featured speaker is Tom Mellon, MS, biology teacher from Kettle Moraine Lutheran School. The school has been using a created wetland system to successfully treat all of the school’s sewage since 1991. Mellon supervised the installation system and has overseen its operation ever since. He is considered by many to be Wisconsin’s leading expert on created wetlands.

On August 20, a 10-year veteran reporter from Newsweek magazine, current associate director of the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources, Peter Annin, will present “The Great Lakes Water Wars – The Threat Continues.” Annin is the author of the award-winning Great Lakes Water Wars (Island Press) and is considered to be the world’s leading authority on Great Lakes water diversions. Annin’s presentation will take place at Baileys Harbor Town Hall at 7 pm.

September 16 brings Maureen Muldoon, Ph.D., associate professor of Hydrgeology and Environmental Geology at UW-Oshkosh to Crossroads at Big Creek, Sturgeon Bay. Muldoon, an award-winner for her work in ground-water monitoring systems in karst and fractured rock aquifers, will present “Threats to Your Drinking Water.” The program starts at 7 pm.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring along burned-out compact fluorescent bulbs (CFBs). DCEC is again providing free disposal of them at each of their events this year. Participants are asked that each burned-out bulb be well wrapped to avoid breakage.
