Ephraim applies for Bird City status

• The Village of Ephraim has applied to be Door County‘s first “Bird City” community, a statewide program that recognizes municipalities and its partners who preserve and improve habitat for birds. Ephraim is partnering with its neighbor, Peninsula State Park, to complete the application process.

Baileys Harbor is also exploring Bird City status. The idea could come before the Baileys Harbor Parks Committee as soon as July 25.

• Dave Hansen (D – Green Bay) won the first of Wisconsin’s nine summer recall elections. Hansen took home 66 percent of the vote in his state Senate race against Republican David VanderLeest, who had launched the recall effort when Hansen, along with his Democratic colleagues, protested Gov. Scott Walker’s budget reform bill. Two more democrats and six Republicans face recalls in August in battles that could re-shape the state legislature.
