Ephraim Highway Open to Local Traffic Only During Half Marathon Weekend

Construction on Highway 42 in Ephraim continued this week, and the highway will be closed to non-local traffic during the Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet 5K weekend.

Runners heading to the Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K on May 4 are encouraged to use detours to avoid construction in downtown Ephraim. Map by Ryan Miller.

Guests staying at Ephraim resorts will be able to reach their lodging via Highway 42, but those staying in Sister Bay and north Ephraim are encouraged to detour around the construction using Ephraim’s back roads from north Ephraim and Highway 57 from Sister Bay.

Crews laid the base surface on the highway this week using crushed asphalt from the original highway. Ephraim Administrator Brent Bristol reported that crews found several layers of asphalt as deep as 17 inches in some places. That material has been reclaimed, crushed and returned to Ephraim.

“Like our village history, generations have added their layer on the foundation of those that came before,” he said. “So as the base goes back down, providing a superior foundation in a manner showing strong environmental stewardship, I think we as a village should be proud of the layer we are adding.”
