Estella Lauter Now Part of Newport’s Poetry Trail

The current display of poetry at Newport State Park features the work of Estella Lauter, Door County Poet Laureate, and will be displayed through March on the Poetry Trail.

Estella and her husband Chuck have had property in the Gibraltar area since 1970, and this is when she began to write poetry. Since retiring she has reveled in the poetry community, and has published three chapbooks with Finishing Line Press. She is a member of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets (WFOP) and of two local writing groups.

Lauter’s poems have won awards from WFOP, Wisconsin Writers Association, and the Peninsula Pulse. Her work as appeared in a number of literary journals, including Free Verse, Verse Wisconsin, Wisconsin People and Ideas, Sheepshead Review, Fox Cry, and N.E.W. Voices.

The poetry trail at Newport State Park begins across the parking lot from the Welcome Center. Part of the trail wanders through the wooded area and the rest of the trail ambles back through more open and level land. When trails are open for cross-country skiing part of the Poetry Trail is accessible only by skiers.

The public can contribute toward the cost of presenting the poetry displays. Make checks payable, and mail, to The Newport Wilderness Society, P.O. Box 187, Ellison Bay, Wis. Donations are tax-deductible within the limits of the law.
