Estella Lauter to Lead Four-Week Poetry Class

Write On, Door County presents a four-week poetry class with Estella Lauter, Door County Poet Laureate 2013-2015. “Travel Through Poetry” will be held four consecutive Sunday afternoons, Oct. 25, Nov. 1, 8, and 15, from 3 – 6 pm. The class will take place at Björklunden, 7590 Boynton Lane, Baileys Harbor. The class is open to new and experienced poets as well as teens and adults.

Most of us travel during the course of our lives, and conversations are often full of images and stories from those trips, whether they were long or short, convivial or solitary, for work or pleasure. In this set of workshops, students will explore writing poetry about trips we have taken through a combination of free writing, reading and discussing examples of published poems, and revising our own work as we share our travel experiences with each other to see what news travels best.

Lauter served as Poet Laureate of Door County (2013-15). She has published three chapbooks with Finishing Line Press, one of which focuses on sailing trips she took with her family for 20 years. Her poems have won awards from the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets, the Wisconsin Writers Association, Fox Cry Review, the Peninsula Pulse and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. She has published poems in Free Verse, Verse Wisconsin, The Wisconsin Journal of People and Ideas and several anthologies of poetry. She is Professor Emerita of the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh, where she chaired the English Department. She founded the Door County Poets Collective, whose first project was Soundings: Door County in Poetry.

Tuition for the four-week class is $180. For more information, call 920.868.1457 or email [email protected].
