Newport State Park Wilderness Day Activities
September 4, 2016
8am. Coffee on the Beach. Start your day with a hot cup from Base Camp Coffee. Meet at Lot 3.
9am. The Story in the Rocks Geology Hike. Join geologist Jack Travis and learn about the geologic history of the Door Peninsula and Newport State Park. Moderate hiking. Meet at Lot 3.
10am. Trees of Door County. Horticulture expert and arborist Tom Wolfe will share his knowledge about trees and shrubs of Door County. Meet at the Nature Center.
11am. Bug Walk. Join entomologist Dick Smythe as he explores the world of insects. Spend an hour learning about little critters found at Newport. Bring a butterfly net if you have one. Meet at the Nature Center, hike to follow.
1pm. Open Door Bird Sanctuary Raptor Program. Meet some of Open Door’s resident birds. Meet at the Nature Center.
2pm. Hotz Family History. Steve Uglinicia will share the rich history of Ferdinand Hotz and his family, who once owned most of the area now known as Newport State Park. Meet at Europe Bay Town Park at the end of Europe Bay Road.
