Evergreen Nursery Celebrates it’s 150th Anniversary

Evergreen Nursery Co., Inc. of Sturgeon Bay will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Aug. 14. The event will be in conjunction with the Wisconsin Nursery and Landscape Association Summer Field Day. Gov. Scott Walker is scheduled to attend.

George Pinney, a pioneer preacher from Ohio, founded evergreen Nursery in 1864. The original nursery was located in the heart of Sturgeon Bay. Tree seedlings were originally harvested from the forest and swamps of Door County, and then shipped by boat to Chicago then by rail across the country.

The nursery has grown to its current size of 430 acres. Today Evergreen Nursery is a leader in plant propagation, each year supplying more than three million tree, shrub and cranberry plants to growers across the United States and Canada.
