Exploring the Library: Meet Libby by OverDrive

by LAURA KAYACAN, Adult Services Librarian, Door County Library

Library users in Wisconsin downloaded more than 7 million digital eBooks, audiobooks and magazines last year using the Wisconsin Digital Library, OverDrive, and many Door County Library users are familiar with the old blue-and-white OverDrive app. In 2017, OverDrive introduced Libby by OverDrive and recommended users switch to this updated, easier-to-use app.

During the coming year, the old blue-and-white app will be retired. If you have the old OverDrive app on your device, it will continue to work, but it will no longer be updated. Starting soon, new Apple users will find Libby by OverDrive in the Apple app store, and Android users will find it on Google Play.

Among the reasons for this change are that the old app technology is out of date, and the Libby app uses a higher level of security. If you have an Apple or Android device and have not switched yet, now is a good time to give Libby by OverDrive a try. If you need help with using Libby, make an appointment by calling 920.743.6578.

Besides using Libby, there are other ways to access materials in the Wisconsin Digital Library. Kindle users will still be able to send books to the Kindle app on their devices. Ebooks, audiobooks and magazines can also be read in a browser, and computer users can access more than 500 streaming videos, including children’s movies, documentaries, instructional videos, and feature, action and classic films.
