Fall Seminars at Bjِrklunden

From Sept. 29 to Oct. 4, Lawrence University’s Björklunden offers the following seminars: “Handel’s Messiah: A Masterpiece of Biblical Interpretation” with Bill Urbrock; “Door’s Autumn Jewels” with Don Quintenz; and “Play of the Hand, Bridge in the 21st Century – Take the Challenge!” with Liz Wallner and Orlaine Gabert.

In “Handel’s Messiah,” participants will study Charles Jennens’ creative use of Biblical texts, and listen to how Handel conveyed meaning for these texts through his beautifully crafted musical settings. Participants should bring a Bible.

Participants will immerse themselves in the most beautiful preserves of Door County each day in search of the inevitable treasures they harbor in “Door’s Autumn Jewels.” Students will enjoy the bird life, flowers, trees and mushrooms that flourish in the fall. Sunrises at this time of the year are later than usual, and students will learn about and likely observe the famous “green flash,” best seen from an eastern exposure to Lake Michigan. Daily free time will be determined mostly on weather conditions.

“Play of the Hand,” is designed for advanced beginners, intermediate and experienced bridge players. In this seminar, participants will integrate and update many of the techniques they already know along with new approaches to the play of the hand.

Wallner and Gabert direct and manage the Sturgeon Bay Duplicate Bridge Club, which meets year-round and hosts an ACBL sanctioned game.

Seminar classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings at Björklunden’s lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor. Each seminar includes meals prepared by Björklunden’s resident chef. For complete course descriptions, fees, and registration dates call 920.839.2216 or visit lawrence.edu/s/bjorklunden.
