Family Days Return to Peninsula School of Art

A sizable altar in an urban Mexican square honors a fallen hero with an abundance of offerings including fresh marigold flowers.

The first Family Day of the school year – scheduled for September 19, from 10 am – 1 pm at the Peninsula School of Art, 3900 County Road F in Fish Creek – embraces the theme of the upcoming exhibit “Day of the Dead” with the creation of flowers to decorate altars installed in the School’s Guenzel Gallery. Flowers play a meaningful part of the traditional Hispanic Day of the Dead festival, in that they welcome and provide a path from the afterlife for beloved souls returning home for the first two days in November. As with all Family Days, art materials are provided and the event is free and open to the public.

The September Family Day is one of two that will be held during the time of the exhibit and both will follow its theme. Family Day on October 17 will explore traditional Day of the Dead mask-making and will be lead by exhibiting artists Wence Martinez and Juan Carlos Frias.
