Family Literacy Calls Upon Dr. Suess

Over 200 people attended a Dr. Seuss-themed Family Literacy Night at Sawyer School on March 8. Reading specialist, Gretchen Montee, teamed up with The Boys and Girls Club and the Sturgeon Bay Parent-Teacher Group (PTG) to enlist the help of school staff and community members to create an interactive event for local families.

Students and their families were invited to participate in several centers based on various books by Dr. Seuss, including making blue gooey goo (Fox in Sox), fishing for rhyming words (McElligot’s Pool), and completing a rhyming sentence (There’s a Wocket in My Pocket). Other centers included creating life size versions of student’s favorite Dr. Seuss characters and visiting the website http://www.seussville.com in the computer lab. High school students from the World Language Club led the students in musical chairs, read the popular ABC Book, and taught students Spanish words from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.

Families enjoyed a simple bagged dinner and took home packets of literacy information and activities. The Target Corporation generously donated enough books for nearly every family to go home with a free book. The Sturgeon Bay Cinema donated two tickets to see The Lorax.

This is the third such event that Sturgeon Bay Elementary Schools and the PTG have put on this year. The fourth and final Family Literacy Night of this school year will feature a mystery theme. Geared toward third to fifth grade students, the event will take place April 12 at Sunrise School.
