Farewell, Baxter the Bobcat

Baxter the bobcat, a 14-year resident of Kewaunee County’s Bruemmer Park Zoo, has been euthanized because of an aggressive form of cancer.

Baxter had an emergency check-up after he appeared ill. The veterinarian who examined him found a cancerous tumor in his stomach and recommended that Baxter be euthanized because of the severity of the diagnosis.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share this news,” said Dave Myers, director of the Kewaunee County Promotions and Recreation Department, “but the decision to euthanize our male bobcat was in the best interest of the animal.”

There are no plans at this time to introduce a new bobcat into the exhibit. Bella, the zoo’s female bobcat, has had only Baxter as a habitat companion since 2006, when both arrived at the zoo as kittens.
