Fathoms

The following poem was written by a Door County author and featured in the 2011 Wisconsin Poets’ Calendar.

Fathoms

Restless fog cloaks the bay
rides the sluggish breeze
steals color from land and lake
Beneath hushed waves
lie skeletons of sailing ships
holds heaped with copper and coal
seaweed and bones

Tomorrow sunshine will turn
mist to silver beads
on the weathered bench
at the end of the dock
Gulls will soar herons dip
over odd small eddies
the occasional bubble
rising to the surface
