February Sky Opens UUF Emerson Series

The folk/Celtic duo of February Sky, featuring Susan Urban and Phil Cooper, will open the 2009 Unitarian Universalist Emerson Performance Series on Saturday, September 19 at 7:30 pm.

February Sky features Cooper on vocals and guitar, and Urban as accompanying vocals and songwriter. Cooper plays his own arrangements of traditional songs on six-string guitar and cittern, and also interprets a number of carefully chosen songs from the best modern folk songwriters. Urban is a writer of “story songs” and accompanies herself on guitar, six-string banjo, mountain dulcimer, and hand percussion.

Cooper and Urban have performed in several bands over the years, while occasionally appearing on stage together. They formed February Sky in 2007 with the goal of presenting songs that address the widest range of human experience – complete with vocal harmony, intricate instrumentation, and thoughtful stagecraft.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The concert at UUF is in conjunction with an open tuning workshop being held the same day at The Door Jam in Sister Bay at 2 pm. This workshop will begin with the teaching of the most common chords in the “DADGAD” tuning often used for Celtic guitar arrangements, followed by the learning of a few Celtic songs. The workshop is $15/person. For more information, contact The Door Jam at 920.421.1327.

The next concert in the UUF Emerson Performance Series will be baritone Keith Harris accompanied by Ken Bozeman on October 29.
