Write On, Door County to host conference for authors, editors, publishers

Write On, Door County presents a two-day conference for aspiring writers who want to learn more about how to get their work into print. The Writing on the Door: Paths to Publication Conference takes place April 12-13 in Egg Harbor. Award-winning authors, editors, publishers and agents are among the presenters.

“Writing is hard; publishing is harder,” said Write On Executive Director Jerod Santek. “Most of the questions I am asked by aspiring writers is how they can get their work out into the world. These two days will focus on options, from freelance writing, to self-publishing, to finding an agent, going with a traditional publisher, marketing and more.”

Friday’s schedule offers a variety of workshops designed to give writers of all genres insight into the business of writing. There are workshops on organizing a poetry manuscript by Door County Poets Laureate Sharon Auberle and Ralph Murre, breaking into the children’s market with middle-grade novelist Lora Hyler, the writer’s journey with award-winning mystery writer Patricia Skalka and nonfiction storytelling by editor Jason Smith.

Saturday offers a range of presentations on how to find an agent, insight into the publishing world and panel discussions with editors and authors.

Chris Fischbach, publisher at Coffee House Press; and Katie Dublinski, associate publisher at Graywolf Press, are among the presenters. Together, the nonprofit literary publishers have produced the work of authors who have won American Book Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, National Book Awards and the Nobel Prize for Literature. Both presses publish poetry, fiction, nonfiction and translations.

Registration for the full conference is $140. A one-day registration for either Friday or Saturday is $80. A limited number of scholarships are available to Door County high school students and Door County educators. Call 920.868.1457 to inquire about scholarships.
