Fine Line Designs Gallery Hosts Plein Air Painters

Plein air painting by Kathie Wheeler.

The peaceful and whimsical sculpture garden of Ephraim’s Fine Line Designs Gallery will be host to a small group of the nation’s finest plein air painters on Thursday, July 22, 10 am – 3 pm. This informal event is held in conjunction with the Peninsula School of Art’s Door County Plein Air Festival. Festival artists, including Colin Page, Lori Beringer, and Kathie Wheeler, will be painting at Fine Line.

Oil painter Colin Page creates the majority of his work outdoors, working from life to capture the light and atmosphere of his subject matter. For Page, painting has the ability to turn “an everyday scene into the poetic.” Page was selected as the People’s Choice Award winner of the 2009 Door County Plein Air Festival, and is the Summer 2010 Catalog Cover artist for L.L. Bean.

Oil painter Lori Beringer paints with a deep respect for each day. She enjoys painting light, and “whatever the light happens to pass over in a certain moment.” She also holds a deep regard for the old, not-so-perfect buildings that she encounters through her research. Painting en plein air allows Beringer to continue that honesty, and she says “I consider it a gift to see the beauty in just about everything, and making people aware of the emotion I feel when I create a painting – that is the gift I want to share with my viewer.”

Kathie Wheeler, also an oil painter, was drawn as a child to the work of the American Impressionists, who would take to the fields and woods with their sketchbooks and paints to record the beauty of their surroundings. “All of my paintings are scenes from my own experiences,” Wheeler says, going on to say that her farm in Southern Wisconsin is responsible for much of this inspiration. Wheeler was the winner of the Dockside Quick Paint at the 2008 Door County Plein Air Festival.

Fine Line plans to donate a portion of the proceeds of any Page, Beringer, or Wheeler paintings purchased during the week of the Door County Plein Air Festival (July 19 through July 24) to the Peninsula School of Art to help further their mission of promoting and fostering an understanding of the visual arts through education, exhibitions, and community outreach programs.
