A home in Sevastopol was a total loss after a fire Sunday morning.
The Egg Harbor Fire Department was dispatched at 9:58 am to a home at 6072 Windsong Bluff Dr. near Carlsville. By the time the first truck arrived 12 minutes later, the fire was already shooting through the roof, said Justin MacDonald, who serves as chief of the Egg Harbor and Ephraim fire departments.
The owners of the vacation home were there when the fire started but were not injured. MacDonald said the fire started when the occupants were burning trash in a burning barrel that spread to dry grass and then the house.
“We generally don’t recommend that people burn trash or use burning barrels,” MacDonald said.
Firefighters were called in from every mainland Door County fire department, as well as Algoma, New Franken and Denmark to assist in fighting the blaze.
“My assistant chief could see smoke from his house a couple of miles away, so we put out the call for additional resources right away,” MacDonald said.
Though winds were gusting throughout the county Sunday morning, Macdonald said his firefighters were lucky that it was not particularly windy at the fire location on the bluff near Bayshore Blufflands Preserve, a Door County Land Trust property.
